RedBallEducation

In the summer of 2012, twenty-one and a half thousand athletes will fulfill their dreams and compete in the Olympics and Paralympics.
So we're asking school children "What's Your Dream?"

This ground-breaking project helps raise the aspirations and achievements of children and young people by focusing on the child as an encourager.

Why? Because, we all know that with the right encouragement we can achieve more than we think possible.

The RedBallEducation programme provides all you need, for teachers and youth leaders to encourage children to take responsibility for their own learning, improve their own focus and effort, and to encourage those around them.

It is ground-breaking because the children act as ‘encouragers’ or young coaches in ways that coaches encourage people in sport or business for example.

The package encourages children to find their “red rubber ball” - a metaphor for our passions; the things that interest and excite each of us, whether it be sport, music, art, business, fashion, animals, journalism ……

As Richard Branson says, “If you can indulge in your passion, life will be far more interesting than if you're just working. You'll work harder at it, and you'll know more about it”.

Focusing on the four elements of Choice, Passion, Vision, and Action – children support each other through open discussion and questioning to establish their hopes, aspirations and dreams for the future.

The children appreciate the benefit of having higher aspirations for themselves, understand what motivates them and discover what they need to do to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
‘You have to chase your dream not just sit there!’
‘You have to work to get your goal’
For the school, the exercise makes a significant contribution to the curriculum overall, particularly to Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Citizenship, and Art and Design, with significant contributions to English and to ICT as well as cross-curricular skills, such as the personal, employability, learning and thinking skills (PELTS) for life under the headings
of: independent enquirer, creative thinker, team worker, self-manager, effective participator and reflective learner.

One teacher who took part in the pilot, reported:

“I know more about the children in my class from this exercise than I have learnt in the rest of the term”.

They specifically learn to:
• to take personal responsibility for their life and what they achieve
• to have vision and set goals
• to take consistent action, even when it feels uncomfortable, to achieve these goals
• to be able to listen to others and communicate effectively with them
• to have an awareness of self and the impact that their behaviour is having on others
• to help others make the most of their skills and abilities.
‘One thing I will do next – Get working and learn more about writing’
‘One thing I will do – Practice. Practice. Practice.”
The package will be available later in the year in the build up to the Olympics – so to get more information and find out how you can get your own toolkit, simply register your interest.
